Northern Italy is best experienced exploring at your own pace.
This 16-night itinerary is planned to start and end in Venice, this journey takes you through the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites, the relaxed beauty of Lake Garda, the romance of Lake Como, the history of Milan, plus a couple stopover towns before returning to Venice for a slower city experience. A car is required for this trip, but we’ve planned this itinerary to minimize the driving distance for travel days, so they aren’t too long. The longest travel day is Lezzeno to the Venice Airport, which is approx. 3hrs and 45mins, which includes the small detour to Iseo, the rest are about 2 to 3 hours, so all very doable, especially with interesting places to stop and explore. For our Milan daytrip, we drove into Como and took the train into Milan, as we didn’t feel 100% comfortable driving in a big city with all the different parking restrictions, so this was an easy and less stress option. Also, we dropped off the rental car at the Venice airport before our stay in Venice, as we obviously didn’t need a car while there.
This guide gives you the structure—while the detailed planning is in our individual guides linked throughout this post.

- Lake Garda — 3 nights
- Lake Como (+ Milan day trip) — 5 nights
- Venice — 4 nights
2. Day 1: Arrival in Venice → Dolomites:
Arrive in Venice and pick up your rental car at the airport before heading north, keep in mind there are tolls on some of these roads.
Venice airport to Bassano del Grappa – 55mins (82kms)
A stop in Bassano del Grappa is the perfect way to ease into the trip. Depending on the timing this could be a perfect lunch spot to break up your drive, or at least try the famous drink from this area, Grappa! Take a walk across Ponte degli Alpini, (covered pedestrian bridge) and leave some time to take photos, before continuing into the mountains.
Bassano del Grappa to Santa Cristina Gherdeina – 2hrs 15mins (180kms)
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Santa Cristina Gherdeina, your base for exploring the Dolomites, (or base of choice).
3. Days 1–5: Dolomites (4 Nights):
This is where your trip begins and gets into a rhythm—early mornings, manageable hikes/sight-seeing, and quiet evenings.
Instead of overloading your days, focus on a few meaningful experiences:
- Sunrise viewpoints
- A few well-planned hikes
- Time to explore nearby towns.
Rather than listing every detail here, you can plan this portion fully using our Dolomites Travel Guide Series, linked below. We’ve been a few times, so we are sharing our 5-day Itinerary, go through them and simple choose the days that interest you the most.

4. Days 5–8: Lake Garda (3 Nights):
Next, you’ll be driving south to the beautiful Lake Garda region.
Santa Cristina Gherdeina to Bardolino – 1 hour 55 mins (173kms), fastest, or along the lake with a stop in Malcesine – 2 hours 30 mins (185kms)
If you take the time on your travel day to stop and explore Malcesine or another town along the way, that will break up your drive, allow you to stretch your legs and see a beautiful and historical town, if you don’t stop at Malcesine on this day, we do have it planned during your stay.
In Lake Garda you’ll enjoy:
- Slower mornings by the water
- Easy exploration between towns
- Long, relaxed meals
Instead of trying to see everything, choose a few towns and enjoy them properly. We choose to group some of the southern towns together for one day trip, then the ones in the north with the Strada della Forra, then the east side of the lake with the Basilica Madonna della Corona to make things as easy as possible.
For planning your time here, you can map everything out with our Lake Garda Travel Guide Series, linked below:
5. Days 8–13: Lake Como (5 Nights + Milan Day Trip):
Next head west to the romantic, dreamy and famous, Lake Como!
Bardolino to Lezzeno – 2 hours 25 mins (169kms) You could do a stopover in Lecco, which is directly on the way.
With five nights, you have time to:
- Explore towns without rushing.
- Take the scenic ferries.
- Rent a boat and spend a day out on the water.
- Take a day trip to Milan for some amazing architecture, history, and a cooking class.
You don’t need to over plan—just anchor each day around one or two key experiences, visiting iconic towns, villas, or relaxing on the water. We rented our boat for the day at the Hotel Villa Aurora.
For a full breakdown of how to structure your time, checkout our Lake Como Travel Guide Series linked below:
Day Trip to Milan
Set aside one day to visit Milan.
Keep it simple—Focus on a few highlights, The Milan Cathedral, The Galleria, Sforza Castle, the Navigli district and a cooking class, it’s a full, but amazing day.
These are the two activities we booked in advance, the Skip-the-line entry tickets for the Milan Cathedral and Terrace walk, and our Pizza and Gelato making class, we booked using the Get Your Guide App.
You can follow our Milan Mini Guide to plan this day without overpacking it, link below:
6. Day 13: Stopover in Iseo:
On your way back toward Venice, a perfect stopover in Iseo on the beautiful and less touristy Lake Iseo, this makes a great midday break, for lunch, exploring the backstreets, harbour, or simple a walk along the water with a gelato.
Lezzeno to Iseo – 1 hour 45 mins (103kms)
It’s a quieter, less-visited lake that offers a completely different feel from Como and Garda.
Plan for:
- A relaxed lunch
- A walk along the waterfront
- A moment to pause before returning to the busier final stop.
You can use your Iseo Stopover Guide to plan your stop, linked below:
7. Days 13–17: Venice (4 Nights):
Iseo to Venice Airport – 2 hours (207kms)
After returning your car to the airport, head into Venice for the final part of your trip. The cheapest way is by bus, you can catch the #5 bus just outside the front doors, it takes about 30 to 45 mins depending on the time of day. Otherwise, there is a water taxi or a regular taxi which would likely be the fastest way and if you have more than 2 to 3 people sharing the taxi it makes it more of a reasonable option, it’s approx. 50 to 60 euros one way to the Piazzale Roma.
Venice rewards those who wake up early.
Build your days around:
- Sunrise walks through empty streets
- Photographing canals before the crowds
- Visiting key sights early or later in the evening
- Mid-day explore the less busy areas or take a day-trip.
With four nights, you have time to experience Venice beyond the surface.
Plan your time using our Venice Travel Guide Series, linked below:

9. References:
For our Northern Italy travel planning, we leaned on a mix of trusted guidebooks, including DK Eyewitness Travel Italy, DK Eyewitness Milan and the Lakes, and Rick Steves Italy, which helped shape our itinerary, base towns, and must-see sights. In addition to the books, it’s helpful to reference official tourism websites, (discovernorthernitaly.com) attraction sites, public transportation resources (like the trains and ferries), and a few local food blogs to see what local foods piques your interest. Google Maps for driving and walking distances, and tour apps for the activities, like Get Your Guide, Viator and Expedia. All driving distances and times in this post are approximate, it will depend on the time of day, weather, which base town you choose and where you’re parking. We hope you find these tips and recommendations helpful.
10. The Wrap Up:
This Northern Italy Itinerary is a mix of big city Grandeur, quaint towns, history, nature hikes, life on the water, great food and of course, time for a gelato with the Passeggiata (evening stroll).
It’s in the quiet mornings in the Dolomites, the stillness of Lake Como at sunrise, and the empty streets of Venice before the day begins where this itinerary really comes to life.
Use this as your framework—and let the slower moments shape the experience.
