Exploring Nanaimo

Located on the eastern coast of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, Nanaimo is often seen as the gateway to the island’s west coast — but it’s far more than just a stopping point. With its walkable downtown, oceanfront pathways, historic streets, and famous dessert trail, Nanaimo is the perfect place to begin your journey.

  1. Walk the Harbourfront Walkway

The Harbourfront Walkway is one of the most relaxing ways to experience downtown Nanaimo. Stretching along the waterfront, the pathway offers beautiful marina views, seaplanes landing in the harbour, public art installations, restaurants, cafes, and the Maffeo Sutton Park, (where the Nanaimo sign is). Early mornings here are especially beautiful for photography, when the light reflects softly across the water and the city slowly wakes up.

  1. Explore the Old City Quarter

Filled with restored heritage buildings, local boutiques, cafés, and brick-lined sidewalks, the Old City Quarter has a cozy and creative atmosphere. It’s an easy area to explore on foot and perfect for slow travel days. You’ll find hidden coffee shops, vintage storefronts, and charming architecture throughout the neighbourhood. Perfect for shopping, a relaxed meal or a special Nanaimo bar treat.

  1. Visit the Bastion

The Nanaimo Bastion is one of the city’s most historic landmarks. Built in 1853 by the Hudson’s Bay Company, this wooden fort overlooks the harbour and offers insight into Nanaimo’s early history. During summer, visitors can often watch the ceremonial cannon firing at noon.

  1. The Nanaimo Bar Trail

One of the most unique experiences in Nanaimo is following the famous Nanaimo Bar Trail — a self-guided food experience dedicated to the city’s iconic dessert. Many of the stops are within walking distance of each other, making this an ideal way to spend an afternoon exploring downtown while sampling different takes on the classic treat. Sometimes the places selected for the Nanaimo Bar Trail can change so checkout the Nanaimo tourism website for more information. Also, this list only mentions the places that are within walking distance in town. If you click on the link above, you can find the websites to each of the places below.

Red’s Bakery

A long-time local favourite, Red’s Bakery serves traditional Nanaimo bars along with fresh pastries and baked goods. The atmosphere feels warm and nostalgic, making it an easy stop for breakfast or a mid-morning coffee break. This was our favourite Nanaimo bar, we’ve been multiple time and tried different flavours, all delicious. Located at 101 Commercial St.

Located at 221 Commercial St.

McLean’s Specialty Foods

A gourmet market and specialty food shop filled with local products, imported treats, and fresh ingredients. It’s an excellent stop for picking up snacks for the road trip toward Tofino. They offer classic Nanaimo bars made strictly with Bird’s Custard powder for true historical accuracy. Located at 426 Fitzwilliam St.

This charming bakery is known for colourful cupcakes and creative dessert options. Their Nanaimo-inspired treats make for perfect photos and a quick sweet stop during the day. A Wee Cupcakery also regularly offers vegan cupcakes and specialty baked goods. Located at 407 Fitzwilliam St.

  1. Nanaimo Museum

For a deeper look into the history and culture of Nanaimo, the Nanaimo Museum is a worthwhile stop before continuing your journey west. The museum highlights the city’s coal mining roots, waterfront history, and local culture through interactive exhibits and historical displays. It also shares the story behind the famous Nanaimo Bar, including early cookbook recipes and the dessert’s rise to becoming one of Canada’s most iconic sweet treats. It’s the perfect final stop on the Nanaimo Bar Trail before heading toward the island’s west coast.

Little Mountain Lookout

Parksville Beach

Englishman River Falls

3. Top Things to Do in Parksville & Qualicum Beach:

As you continue north along the island highway, the scenery shifts into wide sandy beaches, forested parks, and relaxed coastal communities.

  1. Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park

One of the most beautiful beaches on Vancouver Island, Rathtrevor Beach is famous for its soft sand and shallow tides that stretch far into the ocean. It’s an incredible location for sunset photography and peaceful beach walks. We also found sand dollars and interesting shells here.

  1. Parksville Beach

Located in town, Parksville Beach offers beautiful scenery, picnic areas, hotels with ocean views, and a long stretch of boardwalk, making it accessible for all. Ideal for relaxing afternoons, wandering far during low tide, and stunning sunsets.

  1. Little Mountain Lookout

Little Mountain Lookout is located in Parksville, less than 10 mins from the main town area. The cliff views here are incredible, forest and mountains as far as the eye can see, from here you can see Mount Arrowsmith. There is also a pretty, short, loop trail, then perfect to finish off with a beautiful sunset.

  1. Englishman River Falls Provincial Park

Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is located between Parksville and Coombs, it has a great hiking loop (easy to moderate) taking approx. 40 mins. It has amazing forest, river, and waterfall views. If you are short on time or think the 40-minute hike is too much, getting from the parking lot to the suspension bridge and falls is quite close.

  1. Explore Qualicum Beach

Known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful coastline, Qualicum Beach is perfect for a quiet afternoon stroll. Browse local shops, art galleries, and cafes on West 2nd Avenue, their pedestrian-friendly, heritage-style downtown core. Enjoy waterfront views or stop for coffee before heading toward the mountains. In Qualicum Beach there is also an impressive hiking trail through the Heritage Forest with its giant old trees.

Butterfly World Coombs

MacMillan Park (Cathedral Grove)

Old Country Market (Goats on the Roof)

4. Things to do on the Pacific Rim Highway, the Road to Tofino:

The Pacific Rim Highway (#4) runs east/west from Parksville/Qualicum Beach to Tofino and is one of the most scenic drives in Canada. Winding through ancient forests, mountains, lakes, and picturesque towns. We are sharing some of our favourite and unforgettable stops along the way.

  1. Old Country Market (Goats on the Roof)

We’ve been here many times, this whole shopping area is great, the Old County Market has lots of interesting giftware, toys, kitchen gadgets, souvenirs, food, great baked goods, and a restaurant. There is also a yummy donut shop, gelato shop, a market selling fresh fruits and veggies, an amazing Italian restaurant and, oh ya, goats on the roof! This iconic roadside market in Coombs is famous for the goats grazing on its grass-covered roof. Definitely worth a stop, and only 10 mins from Parksville. It’s great for kids and adults alike, breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack or you could pick up food here for a picnic to enjoy during your drive.

  1. Butterfly World Coombs

A small, but pretty stop, just off the main road, (1080 Winchester Rd), mins from the Old Country Market, (Goats on the Roof) this indoor conservatory features, lots of beautiful butterflies, turtles, koi, tropical plants, educational exhibits, and a gift shop featuring local artists. They also have a picnic area.

  1. Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park

A beautiful forest park featuring powerful waterfalls, moss-covered trees, and walking bridges. The rushing water and rainforest scenery make it one of the most photogenic stops on the journey.

  1. MacMillan Provincial Park (Cathedral Grove)

Home to ancient Douglas fir trees, some over 800 years old, and 80 meters tall, Cathedral Grove feels almost like you’ve discovered another planet, in fact this forest was used in the filming of Star Wars Vl – Return of the Jedi, as the planet of Endor, if you’ve seen this movie, you will likely recognize it. Walking beneath these towering old-growth trees surrounded by mist and quiet rainforest is one of the most memorable experiences and a must-see sight on Vancouver Island. There are parking spots on the side of the main road to Tofino (Highway 4), and a crosswalk connecting the 2 hiking trails, as they span both sides of the road, so be careful, watch for pedestrians if driving through this area or for cars if you’re crossing the street. The trails are both short, the north side hike is a little shorter and has a boardwalk the trail on the south side has the largest tree, both are worth exploring, make sure you have your camera ready and on wide angle.

  1. Hole in the Wall Hike

This short hike near Port Alberni leads to a unique man-made tunnel carved through rock with rushing turquoise water flowing beneath it. It’s a quick but rewarding photography stop. There is a small parking area on the south side of the road, that can be hard to see, just pass it on the north side of the road is the Coombs Country Candy shop, so if you pass this you’ve gone too far. If you feel like something sweet at this point in your journey, this candy shop is quite good.

  1. Explore the Port Alberni Harbour Quay

Take a break along the waterfront in Port Alberni before the final stretch toward the coast. The harbour area offers local shops, cafés, and scenic mountain views. Depending on timing you could have lunch here, either along the waterfront or try the Wildflower Bakeshop & Café at 5047 Argyle St. not far from the harbour. We ate here and really liked it, they had a great menu of locally source and fully homemade meals, and a super cute outdoor seating area, where they grow some of their own vegetables, its open from 8:00am to 3:00pm.

Long Beach

Tofino Harbour

MacKenzie Beach

5. Top Things to do in Tofino:

Arriving in Tofino feels like stepping into a completely different world — rugged coastlines, surf culture, rainforest trails, and endless ocean views.

  1. Explore the Tofino Harbour and Local Shops

Once you reach Tofino, Highway 4 turns into Campbell St. which is the main commercial street in town, this area is filled with independent boutiques, surf shops, cafés, art galleries, small hotels, and parks. Heading down towards the waterfront, from First St. there is a large dock where you can meet up with whale watching tours, Kayaking groups, or just simply enjoy the spectacular views.

  1. Beach Hopping in Tofino

One of the best things to do in Tofino is spend a full day beach hopping along the west coast. With approx. 10 beaches between Tofino and Ucluelet, there are a lot of options to explore. Each beach offers something completely different — from dramatic surf breaks and wide sandy shorelines to peaceful sunset viewpoints and hidden coastal trails.

Long Beach

Long Beach is one of the most iconic coastal destinations in British Columbia. Its dramatic shoreline, crashing waves, and misty atmosphere create incredible scenery year-round. The beach is especially beautiful early in the morning when fog rolls across the sand. Long Beach is the longest beach in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, stretching 16 kms, and is located between Tofino and Ucluelet. This Absolutely beautiful beach is a must-see while visiting this area. Perfect for long walks, playing in the sand, picnics, surfing, or just relaxing and taking in the beauty.

Cox Bay Beach

Popular with surfers and photographers alike, Cox Bay Beach is especially stunning during sunset when the sky glows over the Pacific Ocean. Watching surfers against the backdrop of golden evening light is one of the classic Tofino experiences.

Florencia Bay

Reached by a scenic forest trail, Florencia Bay offers quieter beach experiences with soft sand, driftwood, and peaceful ocean views. It’s a wonderful place for slower afternoons away from the busier beaches.

Wickaninnish Beach

Known for its wild coastal scenery and dramatic waves, Wickaninnish Beach is especially popular during storm season. The expansive shoreline and rugged landscape make it one of the most photogenic beaches near Tofino.

Chesterman Beach

Chesterman Beach is perfect for long walks, tidepool exploring, and sunset photography. During low tide, visitors can often walk out toward the small islands just offshore for even more incredible coastal views.

Mackenzie Beach

With calmer waters and a more sheltered shoreline, Mackenzie Beach is ideal for peaceful mornings and relaxing sunset evenings. Driftwood-lined beaches and soft light make it especially beautiful for photography. Mackenzie Beach is located a 6 mins drive from the village of Tofino, one of many along this shore between Tofino and Ucluelet. It’s a smaller, rugged beach with cabins, camping, and a hotel just off the beach, we stayed at the Best Western here and enjoyed every minute.

  1. Surfing

If you surf, this is the place for you. The best surfing beaches are Cox Beach, Chesterman (esp. for beginners) and Long Beach, good for all levels including beginners, with a 16 kms stretch of beach there is plenty of room to spread out during the busier summer season. If you’d like to learn how to surf, you can do that too, checkout Surf Sister Surf School, Pacific Surf Co. or Tofino Surf School. They also provide all required gear.

  1. Tacofino

The original Tacofino food truck began in 2009 behind a surf shop just off the main highway into Tofino. It has since grown to multiple location on Vancouver Island and the mainland. It is very popular and for good reason, their food is delicious! From their fish, pork, steak or chicken tacos, burritos and more, plus amazing guacamole. They wanted to stay true to their humble beginnings, and still operate this original truck, but there can be large lines, especially during the typical lunch hour and worse in the summer. But a must try!!

Inspiration Point – Lighthouse Loop

Florencia Bay

The Lighthouse Loop

6. Exploring Ucluelet:

Located a little over 30 mins from Tofino, Ucluelet is another stunning west coast town, filled with more rugged coastline, beautiful beaches, rainforest walks, and our favourite ocean front trail, (the Lighthouse Loop).

  1. Ucluelet Lighthouse Loop

Located just south of Tofino in Ucluelet, the Lighthouse Loop is one of the most scenic coastal walks on Vancouver Island. This easy trail winds through rainforest paths and rugged cliffside viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Along the route, you’ll find dramatic wave crashes, rocky shorelines, and panoramic ocean views that feel especially magical at golden hour. We strongly recommend doing this loop, the scenery is outstanding.

  1. Ancient Cedars Loop

This one Kilometer loop only takes about 15 mins, making it one of Ucluelet’s easiest hikes, but quite impressive, this old growth forest has sitka spruce (the largest type of spruce), western hemlock, and giant red cedars, some of the oldest trees on the peninsula, estimated to be over 800 years old. You must park at Brown’s Beach Frog lot, or the Raven Parking lot at Tugwell Field on Forbes Rd. Then walk the bike path for about 10 mins, to get to it. A good example of the typical forest walks on Vancouver Island.
